Critical response

Chronicle has received positive reviews. Review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes reports that 85% of critics have given the film a positive review based on 68 reviews, with an average score of 7.3/10, making the film a "Certified Fresh" on the website's rating system. The consensus states "It arrives during a glut of found-footage films, but Chronicle transcends its gimmicks with a smart script, fast-paced direction, and engaging performances from its young, talented cast."  At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted mean rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the film received an average score of 69, based on 27 reviews, which indicates "Generally favorable reviews". Film critic Roger Ebert gave the film a positive review, saying 'From [the] deceptively ordinary beginning, Josh Trank's "Chronicle" grows into an uncommonly entertaining movie that involves elements of a superhero origin story, a science-fic­tion fantasy and a drama about a disturbed teenager.' He gave the film 3.5 stars out of 4. Empire critic Mark Dinning gave the film 4 stars out of a possible 5, saying the film was "A stunning superhero/sci-fi that has appeared out of nowhere to demand your immediate attention." On the negative side, Andrew Schenker of Slant Magazine gave the film 2 out of 4 stars, saying the film "offers up little more than a tired morality play about the dangers of power, rehashing stale insights about the narcissism of the documentary impulse."

Reviews for the film have been generally favourable. As of 4 February 2012, the film currently has a 62% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 113 reviews, with an average rating of 5.8/10, with a consensus that says: "Traditional to a fault, The Woman in Black foregoes gore for chills -- although it may not provide enough of them for viewers attuned to modern, high-stakes horror." The film has received a rating of 62/100 on Metacritic, indicating "generally favorable reviews".

Box office

During opening weekend, The Woman In Black earned $21 million, putting it at the second place in the box office behind Chronicle, which earned about $1 million more. next to a budget of $13 million; making it an unexpected financial success, as the studio was only expecting to receive around $11 million during opening weekend.

In The Grey, Liam Neeson leads an unruly group of oil-rig roughnecks when their plane crashes into the remote Alaskan wilderness. Battling mortal injuries and merciless weather, the survivors have only a few days to escape the icy elements - and a vicious pack of rogue wolves on the hunt - before their time runs out. 

Reception

The film has earned mostly positive reviews from critics. As of February 2, 2012, The Grey holds a 77 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 146 reviews with the consensus stating: "The Grey is an exciting tale of survival, populated with fleshed-out characters and a surprising philosophical agenda." Roger Ebert gave the film 3.5 out of 4 stars.

Dissenters' reviews tend to focus on the film's abrupt ending and perceive the emotional and philosophical undertones as unnecessary. Siobhan Synnot of The Scotsman gave the film two stars, commenting that "On the down side, there's a lot of dull pretentious philosophising about the heartlessness of nature and god. On the up side, you get to see a man punch a wolf in the face." Referring to the film's ending, Matty Kelley of Wrentham Patch stated, "Ever see the movie The Edge starring Anthony Hopkins? Think that, but not as good."
